Hundreds Pay Their Respects On Remembrance Sunday In Beverley

Hundreds of people came out in the historic East Yorkshire Market town of Beverley to mark Remembrance Sunday. 

Large crowds lined the streets for the annual parade while Hengate Gardens was also full. In the gardens, a short service was held before local dignitaries and local group paid their respects.

Jonathan Pugh served with the Green Howards for most of his time in the armed forces. Commenting on the day he said:

“Today is important to me to remember our colleagues who have fallen and also those who have fallen in previous wars that I did not know.”

“It is not just about those I knew but also those who have fallen for the country.”

An emotional Mr Pugh acknowledged it is a tough day. He added it was his first time attending Remembrance Sunday in Beverley since moving to the town. He said he was impressed with the turnout.

Mayor of Beverley Cllr Linda Johnson said:

“It is so important that we get this opportunity for everybody of all ages to come out and show their due respects.”

“It is my honour as the Mayor of Beverley to be able to lay a wreath on the Hengate Memorial which recognises our debt of gratitude to those who lost their lives.”

“This is also an important chance for us to reflect and think about the people who put their lives on the line for us now.”

Remembrance Sunday An Important Time For People To Come Together

Cllr David Elvidge was also at Hengate Garden representing SSAFA East Yorkshire. Speaking to HU17.net he said:

“Ultimately it is important that people give recognition to the sacrifice made by those in our armed forces. It holds various memories for people.”

“It is fascinating to me when you speak to veterans, especially whether they have served in conflict or not and share in those memories. They may have lost people they have served with.”

“It is quite poignant that we all come together and honour that sacrifice.”
