A new production by the Beverley Theatre Company (BTC) will be adapted from Robert Louis Stephenson’s famous novella ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ by Nicholas Briggs.

Many versions of the story of a doctor who transforms into the evil Mr Hyde have been adapted over the years, including Spencer Tracy’s 1941 film version and James Nesbitt’s 2007 BBC adaptation.

Adapted by Nicholas Briggs, the Daleks voice of Doctor Who, this new story follows the original story, but is told through the interaction and flashbacks of Gabriel Utterson, his cousin Richard Enfield, his friend Dr Hastie Lanyon, and Inspector Newcomen of Scotland Yard, as well as the solicitor Gabriel Utterson.

A steadfast of BTC, Emma Drew directs the play, with a cast that will be familiar to audiences from her portrayal of Geraldine Grainger in ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. Among the longest-serving members, David Bugg portrays Dr Jekyll, while Tony Musgrave portrays Mr Hyde.

The long arms of the law are represented by Colin Walls as the Constable and Steve Jordan as Inspector Newcomen, who makes a welcome return to BTC as Jekyll’s friends Gabriel Utterson and Hastie Lanyon.
