and who both have stores in Beverley have cut prices as supermarkets compete for customers with households hit by the soaring cost of living.

Price pressures have led both supermarkets to lose customers to discounters like Aldi and Lidl.

Asda said it covered more than 100 products under its “dropped and locked” promise, including fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh meat, and frozen food.

According to the supermarket, prices will drop by 12% on average.

In addition to eggs, beef, and rice, Morrisons said it would offer a 13% price cut on more than 500 items. In the meantime, Asda announced that its prices were being lowered and locked in until the end of the year.

Due to soaring food prices, the cost of living is rising at its fastest rate in 30 years. The cuts, which will affect food in the fridge, freezer and store cupboard, will affect Morrisons, the nation’s fourth-largest supermarket after , Sainsbury’s and Asda.

David Potts, Chief Executive, Morrisons said;

“We know that our customers are under real financial pressure at the moment and we want to play our part in helping them when it comes to the cost of grocery shopping.”   

“These price cuts will have a noticeable and long term impact on our customers’ budgets and demonstrate our commitment to offering them the best possible value.”

As well as offering price cuts and multi-savings, Morrisons has launched a campaign called ‘Compare & Save’. It aims to help customers find out how much they can save by swapping branded items for own-brand products. 

In addition to this, Morrisons is committed to offering customers the best deals in the market and this week customers can purchase a pizza meal deal for £10 including two pizzas, two sides and a drink.  

As of mid-March 2022, according to the Consumer Price Index, which is the official indicator of inflation in the UK, the cost of food and drink has gone up by 5.9% on a year-on-year basis.
