New research has shown that there are on average 40 spiders living in homes in Yorkshire and they are more active than we may think.

Not only are our homes filled with spiders hiding in corners and under our beds some will grow. They will grow to be bigger than our hands.

If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a male spider in your home.  They are not too difficult to spot as some species will have a leg span of 12cm.

Experts say it is these spiders that tend to roam around our homes. They add that this is as the large spiders crawling around on the lookout for food and female spiders.

Given the size of their legs they can build up quite a speed, and really are not afraid to roam freely around our homes as they explore. This is in stark contracts to smaller female’s. They much prefer to ‘hang about’ corners catching insects.

Research also showed that spiders were most active at 7.30PM and also in the early hours of the morning. While during other hours they found spiders would be hiding under beds, in cupboards, plug holes and down drains.

It also showed that during the colder months that many more spiders make their way into our homes. This is as they look for somewhere warm and cosy during the cooler months.

The giant house spider is credited with being one of the fastest spiders in the UK that we share our homes with. Boasting 1.5cm and a leg span of 6.5cm this eight-legged friend can cover half a metre a second!

These lovely giant house spiders seem to like to be close to us too as they set up their home under our sofas and behind our fireplaces.

Their goal is to reproduce and as a result, they stay for some time committed to a single female. The pair will mate multiple times until the male dies and is eaten by his mate!

But there is nothing to worry about. While these spiders may run across you while you are sleeping or lurking in the shadows under your bed they are harmless.
