Wendy Mitchell, whose best-selling memoir, ‘Somebody I used to Know’ is a Sunday Times bestseller has joined forces with East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), East Riding Council and to support people to live well with dementia.

Wendy, along with Ahmad Krayem and Bob Long, who all live with dementia, is hosting a free 7-week online ‘A Good Life with Dementia’ course led by Innovations in Dementia. Aimed at those who have recently had a dementia diagnosis, (who have had a diagnosis in the last 2 years) the course will help people to understand more about the disease.

It will equip people with the tools for coping with the reality of living with the disease, how to plan for their future, how to keep fit, how to maintain relationships with family and friends, what services are available to offer support and much more.

Wendy said;

“I’m so excited to be hosting this course along with my playmates Bob and Ahmad and our trusty enabler Damian. We all know that a diagnosis of dementia will change people’s lifestyles and we want this course to help prepare people for these changes so they don’t get caught unawares and can continue to live a full life, with their friends and relatives, for as long as possible.”

The free online course starts 18 March over a 7-week period and all sessions will be via Zoom and last about 1 hour 15 minutes. Ideally, participants should sign up for the full 7 weeks, as each week will deal with a different subject.

Verity Wilkinson-Cunningham, Adult and Older People’s Mental Health Commissioning Programme Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire CCG said;

“This is a great opportunity for people who have recently been diagnosed with dementia to come along and talk to others who are already living with the disease.”

“What is unique about the course is that Wendy, Bob and Ahmad who all live with dementia, designed the content and structure and can therefore relate to all the concerns and uncertainties participants may have. It’s an informal course and we hope by taking part it can help to really change people’s lives.”
