Work Begins On Pop-Up Cycle Lanes In Spring Bank And Ferensway

Work to install pop-up cycle lanes in Spring Bank and Ferensway has begun in the city.

In Spring Bank, the left-hand lane in both directions will be converted into a combined bus and cycle lane, which will run between Ferensway and Princes Avenue.

And in Ferensway, cyclists will benefit from a designated cycle and bus lane, from Spring Bank to Anlaby Road.

Overnight works will take place in Ferensway from 7pm to 6am in order to minimise disruption to traffic.

Green coloured surfacing and bike symbols will be installed on the road to help guide cyclists using this route.

Improvements in Spring Bank will also include removing kerb-side parking bays, however, the existing parking lay-bys will remain unaffected.

Councillor Daren Hale, the portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, said: “We have scheduled the works in Ferensway to take place overnight so that we can try and reduce the impact on traffic on flows.

“This work will increase capacity and safety for cyclists and enable more consistent journey times for buses, and if more people choose this form of sustainable travel, then it will also free-up road space for essential deliveries and those who are not able to cycle.”

 The work will be carried out by contractor PBS Construction.

Work to the combined cycle and bus lanes in Spring Bank will also begin on Wednesday.

Both sets of work are expected to be completed by Friday 28 August and are being progressed in line with the requirements for funding allocated by the Department for Transport (DfT) emergency active travel grant.
