The third phase of a £1m scheme to improve roads in Beverley town centre and beyond is due to begin next month.

As part of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council scheme, work began in June to resurface parts of Norwood and North Bar Without, followed by work in Lairgate, Armstong Way, with Corporation Road and to follow later this month.

Now the final stage is due to start in August with the upgrading of a number of busy junctions and roundabouts in the town.

New Walkergate/Walkergate junction

Work is due to begin on Monday 10 August with the resurfacing of the junction of Walkergate and a section of New Walkergate, opposite Morton Lane.

The work will be carried out during the evening from 6pm to 11pm Monday to Friday and is expected to take around eight evenings to complete.

During this time, access will only be permitted into Walkergate for residents, pedestrians and the emergency services

Queensgate double roundabouts

The busy double roundabouts on Queensgate will be resurfaced up to and including the junctions of Keldgate and Cartwright Lane, with work due to begin on Sunday 16 August.

The work will be carried out over four consecutive Sundays (August 16, 23, September 6, 13) between 9am and 7pm, with temporary two-way traffic lights in place on Queensgate and Admiral Walker Road.

During these working hours, Keldgate (between Admiral Walker Road and Lairgate) and Cartwirght Lane (between Thurstan Road and Queensgate roundabout) will be closed to through traffic.

Access will still be permitted to residents, pedestrians and emergency services.

roundabout

The resurfacing of the Manor Road roundabout, as well as the dual carriageway leading up to the junction with New Walkergate and Norwood, is due to start on Wednesday 19 August.

The work will begin with footpath and kerbing improvements lasting two days, from 9.30am to 3.30pm, with temporary lane closures in place.

Then the resurfacing works are due to begin on the evening of Wednesday 19 August. The road between the Manor Road roundabout and the Norwood junction will be temporarily closed to traffic from 6pm to 11pm.

The work is expected to take 10 evenings to complete, weather permitting.

During the working hours, Manor Road will be closed to through traffic with a signed diversion via Norwood, Hull Bridge Road, the A1035 and Molescroft Road.

Access will still be permitted to residents, pedestrians and emergency services.

Bus services will be affected by these works and information about a bus diversion will be made available nearer the time.

Flemingate/Minster Yard South junction

The final stretch of work is due to begin on Friday 4 September with the resurfacing of the junction of Minster Yard South, near , and Flemingate, between the junction and the railway crossing.

Work will be carried out during the evening from 6pm to 11pm, Monday to Friday, and is expected to take eight evenings to complete, weather permitting.

During these working hours, the junction of Minster Yard South and section of Flemingate will be closed to through traffic and pedestrians either side of the railway crossing.

Access will still be given to businesses within the site and the emergency services.

This third phase of the resurfacing works will all be carried out by contractor Tarmac Trading Ltd on the behalf of the council.

The contractor will be carrying out this essential work by following Government advice on social distancing, to protect the workforce and local residents.

Dave Waudby, head of infrastructure and facilities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “We’d like to thank residents and motorists in advance for their patience while our contractor carries out this essential work to improve these roads.

“We hope people will see the improvements once this final phase is completed.”
