Beverley Library & Art Gallery has featured in a Historic England list of ‘Eight of England’s most magnificent libraries’.
The Edwardian building on Champney Road, Beverley, is listed among seven other English libraries, ranging from the Gothic style to modern architecture.
In its listed description, Historic England describes how the library was “funded by a private endowment from successful industrialist and art enthusiast John Champney” and “designed in the Jacobethan style”.
Councillor Shaun Horton, the portfolio holder for tourism, culture and leisure at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“For Beverley Library & Art Gallery to be one of eight on this prestigious Historic England list is a wonderful honour and a testament to the building’s staff and the building itself.
“We are proud that these facilities not only serve our residents well but the building can be recognised nationally in a way such as this.”
