Free Bus Travel For Leisure Users As Ennerdale Closes Its Doors

As Ennerdale Leisure Centre prepares to close its doors for a £1.76 million refurbishment, users are being offered free bus to its closest alternative, Woodford.

The facility in Sutton Road will close on Sunday 30 June at 4.30pm for upgrades to electrical and mechanical services plus refurbishment to the reception, cafe gym, studio and sauna areas.

From Monday 1 July, users will be offered free bus travel to Woodford in Holderness Road until the new year, when Ennerdale is expected to re-open.

The service between the two leisure centres is for all ages on the existing Stagecoach service number 8 bus during all its hours of operation.

Users travelling to the centre will be able to get on board at Ennerdale and off at Woodford. On the return journey, the free return ticket can be used from Woodford, but passengers can get off anywhere along the return route.

During Ennerdale’s closure, the £1.76million project will see a refurbishment of all of the centre’s electrical and mechanical services with upgrades planned for the filtration, ventilation and cold water systems.

The main reception area and cafe will be given a facelift, along with the sauna space and inclusion of dedicated disabled changing facilities, and an update of the fitness gym and studio.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “We understand Ennerdale is a very popular centre so we have worked closely with Stagecoach to provide this free service and ensure users are affected as little as possible.”
