Finale Of Year-Long Hull 2017 Project Exploring Effects Of Dementia

The finale of an inspirational year-long project exploring the lives of people living with dementia takes place in Hull this Friday.

The Butterfly Effect, part of the programme, has celebrated individual stories whilst inviting people to question their preconceptions of what life with dementia is like through various workshops.

The final event, Hear Our Voice, Celebrate With Us, at Kardomah94 at 2pm on Friday 1 December, will include an exhibition of a selection of artwork produced for the project throughout the year.

A sculpture, having transformed into a butterfly, is also set to take to the sky, followed by a kaleidoscope of butterflies carrying messages of hope for the future.

This final event, which starts at 2pm on Friday, will be a celebration of everyone who has attended The Butterfly Effect workshops to date, those who will join in the future, and the project’s achievements throughout 2017 and beyond.

June Cooke, facilitator of the Butterflies, said:

“It’s been great trying new things and having fun.

“Seeing people with dementia relaxed and enjoying performing in front of a live audience has been an absolute joy, and if those coming to see our exhibitions and visiting our blog have gained a little more understanding about dementia, then we have ticked all our boxes.”

Tickets for Hear Our Voice, Celebrate With Us are available from Kardomah94 and are free.
The Butterfly Effect is part of Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme.

The year-long project has included glass percussion workshops exploring the fragility of memory led by glass percussionist Brendan Murphy, and other music, poetry and art workshops and exhibitions.

A sculpture has been the centrepiece of each exhibition, symbolising the transition of those affected by dementia from diagnosis, to acceptance and positive living.
