Internationally renowned photographer Martin Parr will announce the winners of the Hull Beermat Photography Festival at Kardomah94 later this month.

Parr will reveal the 20 images that will be printed onto beermats throughout Hull, as well as giving a talk about his life and work.

Hull Beermat Photography Festival launched in September and since then people have been able to upload their entries to social media before the competition closed yesterday (Tuesday October 31).

Parr will now select his top 20 images that will all be printed onto beermats strewn across the tables of the city’s pub, clubs and venues until the end of the year.

Photographer and Hull Beermat Photography Festival organiser Graeme Oxby said: “The standard and variety of entries has been remarkable. It has been brilliant to see the different interpretations of the competition and find out what Hull means to so many people through their photography.”

“Martin Parr is one of the world’s most revered documentary photographers so for the winners to have their images selected by him is a real honour.”

The entries have all been submitted to social media using the hashtag #Hullphoto2017.

They include iconic images connected with Hull like the Humber Bridge, The Deep and Queen Victoria Square, as well as photographs taken in less well-known locations throughout the city.

Tickets for the announcement on Wednesday November 15 are free and can be bought at Hull Box Office and on the Hull 2017 website.

Hull Beermat Photography Festival is part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Creative Communities Programme.

The competition has also encouraged people to engage with photography and improve their skills through various workshops over the last couple of months.

Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, said:

“As with so many projects in this City of Culture year, the Hull Beermat Photography Festival has seen people’s creativity let loose. It has resulted in some stunning images across social media, of Hull and local people celebrating their city in 2017. We are delighted to be welcoming Martin Parr back to Hull to judge the results.”

Parr’s own work is currently on display at Humber Street Gallery as part of the Hull, Portrait of a City exhibition.
