Plans for a near half million pounds ‘temporary’ road have been met with deep concern by residents after what have been described as ‘constructive’ talks with Yorkshire Water.

The company is about to start construction on a 37 million pounds investment to improve facilities at their Beverley treatment plant.

Installation of a ‘temporary’ slip road, on common land designed to ease access to the site, has caused deep concerns among residents who fear it will see the start of a process which could end in the loss of a vital public amenity.

Concerns were raised further when company representatives explained that the ‘temporary’ road is likely to be in place for up to 5 years.

Follow up reinstatement to the pasture land means it could be 10 years before the land is returned to its natural state. Wildlife considerations such as crested newts and flood potential could add to further delays.

Beverley Labour Party spokesman said;

“Although we welcome the talks with Yorkshire Water, the timescale of the project means people are sceptical regarding the assurances given.”

“We know from other projects such as the construction of the Community Hospital on Swinemoor, that unforseen circumstances can result in delays.”

“The company explained that their planning consent is for a period of 5 years. Any slippage could be of real concern.”

“Yorkshire Water have agreed to continued liaison, which we welcome. But we think vigilance will be essential if we’re not to lose this vital amenity to development in the longer term.”
