Connor Berney Wins Copper Saucepan Final

The tenth final of the Copper Saucepan Apprentice Chef of the Year competition, held on Sunday at a packed Beverley Food Festival, set two firsts – the first female finalist and the first finalist from North Lincolnshire.

Going head to head in the competition, organised by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitality Association (HEYHA), were eventual winner Connor Berney, of the Ashbourne Hotel, Killingholme, and Vicky Martin, of the Hull Marina.

The final saw the two young chefs cook a two course meal in just 30 minutes in front of a packed food theatre, housed in a marquee in Saturday Market, Beverley.

Judges described it as an extremely close decision before awarding the trophy to Connor, whose main course of pan fried sea bass, prawn and fennel risotto sautéed kale, radish and a lemon-
infused cream sauce was follow by a dessert of Eton Mess.

Vicky produced a main course of mackerel three ways (Tatar topped with radish; pan-seared with potato and fennel and a smoked mackerel Scotch egg) with a cucumber puree and horseradish. This was followed by a deconstructed lime and mint cheesecake served with a mojito shot.

In addition to the Copper Saucepan trophy, Connor received a cheque for £300, the chance to spend a day in the kitchens of Winteringham Fields and membership of the Chefs Guild of Great Britain.

Vicky received £100, at kitchen experience day at Winteringham and membership of the Chefs Guild.
