Appeal For Help With Memorial Wall in Beverley

An East Riding care home specialising in caring for with advanced dementia is inviting the loved ones of former residents to help them create a memorial wall.

A ‘meadow’ of forget-me-not flowers is being stencilled onto the wall along the main stairwell at The Old School House care home, in Beverley in memory of former residents who have lost their battles with dementia.

The blue forget-me-not flower has been chosen to feature in the wall as it is the symbol used by national charity the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of a condition which affects around 5,500 people in the East Riding alone.

Councillor , the ’s portfolio holder for adult and carer services, said: “Dementia is a condition which affects thousands of people in the East Riding, whether they are battling with the condition or caring for a loved one.

“The memorial wall is the perfect way to celebrate those who have lost their lives while raising awareness of what is a truly devastating condition.”

Each hand painted anonymous flower will symbolise the life of a former resident at the care home.

Sarah Buescher, senior care officer at The Old School House, who is co-ordinating the memorial wall project, said:

“The aim of this project is to celebrate life, to provide an opportunity for reflection and as a mark of respect for those who have passed away.

“We are in the early stages of planning regular celebration days and would like the memorial to play a key part in these in the future.”

A number of visitors who have stayed in contact with the care home, since the death of their loved ones, were invited back to make a start on the memorial wall.

The care home is now keen to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in the project in memory of a loved one who was once a resident.
