Work Starts On £5m Scheme At Beverley Primary School

Work is getting underway on a £5million scheme to amalgamate a Beverley primary school’s infant and junior schools into a brand new building on a single site.

The new school and nursery unit for St Nicholas Primary School is being built on the infant school site in Holme Church Lane. The new building will enable the school to accommodate 420 pupils, plus the nursery.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council project is being managed by the council’s building and design team and funded by the Government’s schools capital grant, a mixture of schools condition capital and basic need funding. The contractors are the Hall Construction Group Ltd, based in Hull.

Work will start on the site on 31 May and the scheduled completion date for the new building is 11 July 2017. This will allow the school to move across from the existing infant and junior buildings ready to start in the new school at the start of the 2017 autumn term.

External works, including the demolition of the current infant building and nursery are programmed for completion by 27 September 2017.

Headteacher Liz Pollard said:

“We are delighted that the work on the new build is starting. A new school building amalgamating all the children on one site has been a dream for so long for all of us here and it is wonderful news that the building work is beginning.”

“It is an exciting time for everyone as we become involved in the build and it will be super for the children to see the changes to the site each week. We are really looking forward to moving in when we can be a primary school on one site where the children will have opportunities to work and learn more closely together.”

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“This development will give the school a fantastic new building which will bring the whole school together on one site and it will provide superb new facilities for the children and staff.”

Martin Hall, managing director of the Hall Construction Group, said the cost led procurement contract was the first of its type in the area, and the company is delighted to have won it in the face of stiff competition from national contractors.

“The start on site on 31 May is the culmination of several months of planning and design, working closely with the client, architect HLM and structural engineers Mason Clarke. We look forward to having the school open in summer 2017,” he said.
