Recycle Your Christmas Tree Put it in the Brown Bin

Brown Bins

Waste and officers at East Riding of Yorkshire Council are encouraging to recycle their real Christmas trees after the festive holiday.

And the easiest way for residents to dispose of their used trees is by placing them next to their brown bin.

The council collects brown bins all year round and the real trees – along with other garden waste and food waste – will get taken away and recycled into compost.

Alternatively residents can take real trees to their nearest household waste recycling site.

But people are asked to remove all their decorations and tinsel from their tree before they recycle it.
Cllr Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said: “Real Christmas trees can easily be recycled into compost – which will help to grow other trees, plants, vegetables and crops.

“So we would encourage people to help us recycle them by placing them out with their brown bins.”

Bin collection dates change over the Christmas period and residents can find theirs by looking at the
collection calendars posted out to homes in December, or online at the website bins.eastriding.gov.uk.

Just enter your postcode to find your address and your green, blue and brown bin collection dates.

Residents can also sign up to the council’s free text reminder service to receive a text to their phone the night before their bin collection. Information on how to sign up is on the calendar or on the council’s website www.eastriding.gov.uk and search ‘bin collection dates’.

Bin collections will return to normal days from January 18.

The council’s household waste recycling sites will be open from 10am to 5pm during the Christmas period, but will close at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

They will be closed all day on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
