Mother Urges Parents To Be Cautious After Daughter Is Injured On Rope Swing

A Beverley mother says she wants to warn other parents of the dangers involved when it comes to playing on rope swings tied to trees on the Westwood.

Michelle Connor was speaking after her 11-year-old daughter, Alana was seriously injured when she fell 30 feet while playing on a rope swing.

Speaking to HU17.net Michelle said;

“After my experience I just wanted to warn other parents of the dangers involved with allowing their children to play on rope swings.”

“Alana was at the Westwood with friends and their parents when the accident happened. She suffered two fractured wrists and underwent surgery and needed to stay in hospital for three days.”

“Because of the location of where her fall happened it made it difficult to get to her as the bank was so steep. The fire brigade had to be called to assist the paramedics who already on site helping my daughter.”

Michelle took time to praise the emergency services for the empathy and care they showed towards her daughter she said;

“We received first class care from the ambulance service, paramedics and fire service and also A&E at the Hull Royal Infirmary and the Children’s Ward.”

While the care she received may have been first class Michelle is keen to highlight the possible risks to other parents in Beverley, she said;

“I would hate to see any other child be injured or for any other parent to go through that trauma.”

“I’m sure all of us want to encourage your children to be outside playing in the open air, getting away from games consoles and the television during the summer holidays.”

“I really wanted to warn other parents of the dangers involved so future accidents like this can be avoided. The swing my daughter was playing on a since been cut down by the fire brigade.”

“The young fireman who cut down the rope was puzzled as to how it was even tied to the tree in the first place given the height. While this one has been removed I’m sure there are many others dotted around the Westwood.”

“I would have to say that people want to play on rope swings and be active it is better to do so the supervised environment like Go Ape.”

Michelle and her family were due to jet off on holiday next week however this has had to be cancelled following the accident, she said;

“Alana was really upset about having to cancel our holiday due to accident, but you can go on holiday any time. I’m just grateful she was not more seriously injured.”
