Local Police Back Surrender Your Knife Campaign

Humberside Police

Humberside Police are backing a national campaign to encourage people to surrender their knives, in a bid to reduce unnecessary lives lost.

With two lives very recently lost in our force area, where bladed weapons were used, now is the time to hand over your knives and no questions will be asked.

As of July 1, 2015 sealed knife bins will be located at Beverley, Bridlington, Clough Road, Goole, Grimsby and Scunthorpe Police Station for one month where you can simply walk in and drop in your knives, with no requirement to fill in any forms or speak to any staff member.

Local figures show Humberside Police dealt with 398 knife crimes, since April 1, 2014 – 31 March, 2015, which saw an increase of 74 from the previous year.

130 people were arrested in Humberside last year for possessing a bladed weapon.

Inspector Neil Pattison, overseeing the knife amnesty for Humberside Police, said: “There are only a handful of reasons as to why someone should be carrying a knife on them, for the majority of the time there is no real reason why someone should be walking the streets with a concealed weapon.

“For the month of July, I am encouraging anyone who has a knife or instrument which is capable of piercing the skin or causing damage, to take it to a police station and we will dispose of it for you in a safe and secure manner. No questions will be asked, even if the knife is banned.

“This campaign really is about getting as many knives off our streets as possible.”

For each knife which is handed in as part of the national ‘Surrender Your Knife’ campaign a 23ft high Angel statue will be created made from 100,000 knives across the UK.

The intention is that every senior officer from each of the 43 forces nationally will take part in soldering knives onto the statue. The initiative has been supported by the Home Office and has already had Chief Constables from six forces visit the statue, to solder the knives onto the Angel.
