Beverley Minster is Giving It All Away

Minster is getting 600 new seats, and the old ones are on offer to good homes.

For more than 40 years congregations and audiences in Beverley Minster have been sitting on high quality leather-seated chairs that have been comfortable and attractive but, unfortunately, they have come to the end of their working lives.

The glue that holds the frames together has aged and only a programme of running repairs by the virgers has kept them usable over the last few years. Now they are being replaced, and anyone who can offer a good home to one (or more) in their retirement is welcome to take them.

Currently there are 100 that have been condemned as unsafe for use in a public venue to be taken away – at the new owners’ own risk – which may be ideal as mementoes or spare chairs in the home after a small dose of TLC.

At the end of February the remaining seats, which are in better condition and still in use, will be made available as well – for which donations are invited.

“They’ve done the church proud for many years,” said Rev. , Vicar of Beverley Minster, “but they have now come to the end of their working lives.”

“We have bought new chairs which will last us for at least another 40 years but we don’t want to just cast the old ones out because many people have fond memories of them and still remember the fund-raising that bought them back in the 1970s.”

“So if anyone wants to give them a new lease of life then they can have them with our blessing and thanks.”
