Two of Beverley’s major sporting icons have joined forces for a landmark celebratory event in August as part of a summer-long feast of festivities.
Beverley Race Course will host the inaugural sprint called The Beverley Golf Club 125th Anniversary Stakes as the highlight of the Westwood club’s birthday events in 2014.
It will be the first-time Yorkshire’s oldest golf club has sponsored a horserace event and course manager Kate McKee was keen to support the move, she said;
“We’re delighted to have Beverley Golf Club celebrating such a great anniversary with us.”
“We share not only our home on the Westwood with the club but a lot of our members are also keen golfing fans, so it’s great to be forging closer ties.”
Golf Club manager Richard Reynolds added:
“This is probably a long-overdue partnership with our Westwood neighbours – two great sports coming together in celebration of our long and illustrious histories.”
Full details of the race on August 14th have yet to be confirmed, although discounts for the Grandstand and Paddock will be available for golf club members.
Other highlights this summer include the club’s Scratch Championship on August 23rd to find the champion golfer of the year, plus a Men’s Senior Open on Wednesday August 13.
