legend Dean Windass will be on hand next week to lend his support and cheer on over 200 adults with learning and physical disabilities as they take part in the annual East Riding Legacy event.

This will be the third year the event has taken place, following a similar event in 2012 to mark the London Olympic Games. Dean has supported the event since then, and this year has agreed to become a patron.

The event has been organised in partnership between Longcroft School and East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s adult social care and employment, education and skills department.

Adults with learning and physical disabilities that attend council-run day centres across the East Riding will take part in activities such as athletics, volleyball, darts and boccia.

The chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Pat O’Neil and vice chairman Councillor Peter Turner will also be attending during the three-day event.

Dean said:

“It’s an honour to be invited to become the patron of the East Riding Legacy.

“I’ve been to the first two annual events, which have both been fantastic, and clearly many get a lot out of them.

“The participants, organisers, workers and volunteers are all brilliant, and I look forward to attending again next week and helping to promote this really great project and working with some wonderful people.”

Councillor Richard Harrap, portfolio holder for adult and carer services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This event has developed into a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to support the people who access day services across the East Riding, for them to get together and have a great amount of fun.

“Many of the people have developed friendships with others from different areas, and it’s wonderful to be able to get everyone together for such a great event.”

Kester Rymaruk, learning development officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council and event co-ordinator, said:

“Dean has been a great supporter of the event since we started in 2012, to coincide with the London Olympics.

“When we were discussing the idea of having a patron, Dean was the first suggestion and a natural choice. Not only will this be a great bonus to the project, but it’s also our way of saying thankyou to Dean.

“With Hull City soon to kick off the new Premier League season, it’s great to have a true Tigers hero as our patron.”

, Longcroft School community liaison co-ordinator and event organiser, said:

“Longcroft School is once again proud to be working in partnership with the council to help organise and host this wonderful event.

“Over the three days, we expect over 200 adults with special educational and physical needs will have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

“Alongside receiving support from , Beverley Lions, the David Ford Trust and Blue Keld again, which we are very grateful having Dean on board as the project’s patron really is the cherry on the cake.”
