Tickton Church of England Primary School Open Gardens

Aside from the bees, there’s a real buzz around Tickton Primary School about its Open Garden Day on Friday 27th June 2014. Staff and pupils are proudly preparing to open the School grounds under the National Garden Scheme – an organisation which promotes gardens opening for charity. Admission fees are donated through the NGS to nursing and caring charities such as Marie Curie and Macmillan.

Tickton is the only school in the East Riding to open its grounds in 2014.

The NGS scheme will allow the public to see the versatility of school grounds, and visitors will not be disappointed with the vast array of learning and play areas. Aside from an unusual hexagonal garden, hosting a variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs, there is a large poly-tunnel, growing more tender crops, along with attractive flower borders at the school’s reception area.

Class 5 have entered the ’s tomato growing competition and visitors will see tomato plants in a variety of locations around the grounds, as part of a science experiment.

Tickton CE Primary boasts a wealth of learning experiences for pupils – both for play and study time. From a tranquil pond area where visitors will be able to go pond dipping, to the wonderfully messy and incredibly popular ‘Mud Kitchen’ where children can get ‘hands on’ the base material for growing. There is a shaded woodland walk which includes a mini stumpery, along with a camp fire area. Throughout the grounds there are areas dedicated to wildlife, including bug hotels which the children created during a very successful Eco Day in 2013.

Visitors will be offered the opportunity to buy plants raised by the children, along with the fruits of Class 6’s enterprise projects. Members of the Parents & Friends Association are also helping out with serving tea and cakes in ‘The Lodge’. Admission is £2.50 per adult, with accompanied children free – these proceeds will go directly to the NGS charities. Plant sales will contribute to the funding of outdoor education within school. The grounds will be open between 10am and 3pm, and the school is looking forward to sharing its wonderful gardens with visitors.
