Coastguard Rescue Officers Show Beaver Scouts How To Stay Safe

1st Molescroft Beaver Colony was joined by HM Coastguard for their weekly meeting. The Hornsea Coastguard Rescue Team was invited by Beaver Scout Leader, Mollie Stewart, to come down and show Scouts what they do as Coastguard Rescue Officers.

Throughout the evening, the Beaver Scouts enjoyed listening to a small talk followed by a short demonstration. The demonstration allowed one of the beavers to make a simulated emergency call to one of the Coastguard Rescue Officers mobile phones.

This enabled the team to simulate a response and demonstrate a small rescue whilst also teaching the children what to do if they or anyone they see gets into trouble on the coast.

The Beaver Scouts had a good look at some of the equipment that the Coastguard Rescue Teams use and even had the opportunity to try on some of the jackets and lay on the stretcher.

Hornsea Coastguard Station Officer John Escreet says:

“Knowing what to do in an emergency on the coast is extremely important and we at Hornsea Coastguard Rescue Team are proud to be able to pass on this message in a way that the children enjoyed.

“It was a good fun filled evening while ensuring that an important message was put across.

“During Volunteers Week, 1st – 7th June 2013 Hornsea Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) also engaged with members of the community by carrying out numerous patrols along the East Coast and spoke with members of the public on the beaches and resorts in the area.

“Our message is clear: enjoy our coastline, but before careful. Remember, if you get into trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

On call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the men and women who make up the Coastguard Rescue Service are trained and equipped to respond to a wide-range of emergencies at a moment’s notice.

Their skills include navigation and map reading, technical mud rescue, water rescue, rope rescue, cliff rescue, assisting helicopter operations and incident prevention.
