Five For All : Raising The Game For Students With Learning Difficulties & Disabilities

Makers from around Yorkshire and the Humber are determined that their ‘Five-For-All’ initiative continues to benefit students next year.

After the success of the inaugural five-a-side football tournament, students with learning difficulties and disabilities had a second opportunity to compete at on 26 June.

This tournament was attended by teams from Franklin College, Grimsby Institute, East Riding College, Yorkshire Coast College, Scarborough (the overall winners) and Shipley College, as well as the home team from Bishop Burton College.

Gaz Lee, Bishop Burton College’s Sport Maker, explained that,

“It’s important to the group of Sport Makers that we keep this initiative going. The connections made through the programme have given these students the chance to represent their colleges for the first time. The tournaments have clearly meant a lot to them and really raised their motivation and enthusiasm – our students are all looking forward to the next one.”

CJ Stephens, Sport Maker at Franklin College, agrees. She said,

“The Five-For-All tournaments are giving students with additional needs the chance to compete, participate and have fun. It’s given them a buzz and incentive to return and take up courses at the College next year. I’ve seen an improvement in team ethics and how the students respect one another.”

Sport England’s Active Colleges strategy has seen the appointment of 17 Sport Makers across the region. The aim of the £25m national initiative is to get more young people taking part in sport.
