Mill Lane United Wizards Win York RI Tournament

Mill Lane United

Wizards U11s produced some magical and deservedly won the York RI tournament at the weekend.

In contrast to the cloudy conditions Mill Lane United played some bright and confident football with Lloyd Bean, Jamie Pettigrew and Daniel Wilson prominent, beating two local York teams 3:0 and 2:0 to take an early advantage in the league stages.

Next up was Driffield Dragons who after a mix up in the Wizards box took an early lead in the 10 minute contest. However Mill Lane United stuck to their passing game and eventually the incessant pressure on the Dragons goal paid dividends as 2 well worked goals gave the Wizards a 2:1 victory.

The penultimate game in the league was against Hutton Cranswick who battled hard throughout taking an early chance to lead the contest 1:0. Mill Lane United came back strong with George Addison, Harry Sadler and making telling contributions as the Wizards scored one and made numerous other chances but found the Cranswick keeper in fine form.

The final match against another local team ended 0:0 despite some great play from both Adam Prince and Arran Naldrett as the Wizards did everything but score.

In the final the Wizards came up against a strong Fulford team and a breakaway from the York side put them 1:0 after only 3 minutes. Mill Lane United continued to press for the equaliser and just before the interval a flowing move involving Sadler and Pettigrew gave Wise the space to lash the ball home.

The Wizards piled on the pressure in the second half and during extra time, missing a hatful of chances as the match went to penalties.

After Pettigrew, Sadler and Naldrett had all converted to put Mill Lane United 3:2 in front, the Fulford player struck a great shot but Jack Thurston in the Wizards goal dived full length to push the ball around the post to win the final.
