United Overcome Canadian Test To Maintain 100% Record

On a warm Sunday afternoon Mill Lane United Yellows u14 Girls put their 100% record on the line when they welcomed L’arcs Quebec City Development team from Canada to Bishop Burton on their tour of England.

Mill Lane United knew they would have to be on top form against their opponents who had won 3 out of 4 games on tour with their only defeat been a 4 3 reverse against Aston Villa girls.The game started in very warm conditions on a perfect pitch ideal for passing .

Staight from the Mill Lane United took the game to their Canadian visitors with the midfield of Charlotte Holliday ,Emma Smith,Emma Johnson and Tonya Storr linking well with some fast passing football that had their opponents on the back foot.Enjoying the early chances the Yellows were on their guard against a team that counter attacked with pace and confidence and the defence of Jessica Pashby, Amy Radford,Courtney McConville and Lucy Crockett had to be up to the task with some committed challenges.

The game was end to end as both teams probed for the break through which came to the Yellows after 20 minutes with a goal that typified the way this young side plays.

A good kick out from goal keeper Lea Shalgosky found winger Charlotte Holliday quickly getting the ball under control before charging forward 30 yards beating 2 defenders on the way before releasing midfield dynamo Emma Smith down the right who in turn hit a superb pass towards striker Misty(Marie)Russell who finished in style giving the diving goal keeper no chance with a fine right foot shot into the back of the net after a length of the field move to give Mill Lane United Yellows a deserved 1 0 lead.

Credit to the visitors who carried on playing their patient style of football as they strived for the equaliser and it was only last ditch defence with Radford and McConville outstanding ably assisted by goal keeper Leah Shalgosky which kept them out as the Beverley side tired in the heat .

The half time whistle blew with Mill Lane United leading 1 0 lead.The second half started with the visitors on the attack as they looked for the equaliser and finally the pressure told and a clinical finish after a mix up in the Yellows defence made the score 1 1.

Over the years this Mill Lane United team had always risen to a challenge and again they did disappoint as they hit back with a performance of guts and determination against their strongest opponents of the season showing why they had just won their fifth successive league title.Under pressure for the first 10 minutes of the half they could have been forgiven for throwing in the towel after conceding a goal ,but no they rolled up their sleeves and took the game to the visitors with Holliday ,Smith,Storr and Johnson working their socks off in midfield .

Finally with 20 minutes left their efforts were rewarded with 2 quick fire goals ,firstly by outstanding midfielder Tonya Storr after the goal keeper could not hold a thunderbolt from Emma Smith and the third goal and second of the game for Misty (Marie)Russell after a fine through ball from Nagee found Russell in space who finished with ease.

Totally dominate the Yellows were now in control as they created more chances and only last ditch defence and good goal keeping keeping the score at 3 1.

With so much energy used in warm conditions the Yellows visibly tired as the visitors poured forward trying to get back into the game.Penned in their own half for the final 10 minutes the Beverley side really had to dig deep as wave after wave of attacks put pressure on their goal .

Finally the pressure told as the visitors scored 3 minutes from the end to give us a grandstand finish.

Mill Lane United Yellows had not come this far to conceded again and they saw out the final few minutes to gain a deserved 3 2 victory in a superb advert for Girls football as both team played with energy,desire and no amount of skill .

Both sides received a deserved round of applause after this international friendly. For the Yellows a brilliant team performance showing they can match it with the best setting the standard for the rest of the season as they look forward to the league cup semi final against North Ferriby and their summer tournaments.
