Celebration of Christmas Concert @ St Mary’s Church

On Saturday 8th December, the annual “Celebration of Christmas” in support of SSAFA Forces Help East Yorkshire took place in Beverley’s historic St Mary’s Church, blessed by Reverend ’s most welcome support.

The concert was led by the Concert Band, who put on a superb show, joined by choirs from Longcroft School, St Mary’s Primary School and St Nicholas Primary School.

David Elvidge, Chairman of the East Riding Branch of SSAFA and the event organiser, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following, all the who gave up their time supported by their teachers Julie Harris, Kathryn Straw, Elly Gay and of course, the wonderful audience that included civic guests from around the East Riding. The readers, including Beverley’s Mayor Councillor Margaret Pinder and BBC Radio Humberside and Look North presenter Amanda White. Thank you also to the SSAFA Team, who provided refreshments and Tesco for their donation of mince pies.”

“We are also indebted to Chris and Margaret Hairsine of Kip McGrath Education Centres, for sponsorship of the programmes and last but not least Longcroft’s Matt Snowden for his organisational skills, and my long-suffering wife Janet for manning the door.”

Matt Snowden, Longcroft School’s Community Liaison Coordinator, said:

“As a school that enjoys playing an active role in the wider Beverley community, it is always wonderful to support events such as this. Not only did it help to raise awareness of the important work carried out by SSAFA, it was also an excellent opportunity for our students to perform to a live audience. I hope the concert helped all those in attendance to get into the festive spirit, whilst at the same time sparing a thought for those Armed Forces personnel stationed around the world.”

Although the event was free to enter, a total of over £300 was raised thanks to the generous donations of those who attended.

David Elvidge concluded:

“We are already discussing what to put on next December, but until then and on behalf of SSAFA Forces Help East Yorkshire, I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and happy New Year.”
