Blue & Golds Beaten But Fight Back After Poor Start

This match had to be switched to the Beverley Leisure Centre after Beverley’s opponents discovered that no posts had been erected at their council owned pitch at Costello on the Friday before the game.

It proved to be a disappointment following a close season of optimism but is early days yet for Adam’s men who yet again starved of possession in this game and had to perform miracles in defence at times. They managed to restrict their opponents to four tries, one of which was an interception try and another two came from kicks.

There is clearly nothing wrong with their defence, and if they can just cut out the handling errors early in the tackle count then progress will surely be made this season. All of the visitors 20 points were scored in the first half most of which was played in Beverley’s half of the field. This left Adams with a huge motivational effort during the half time talk.

The hosts did snatch the initiative in the second half straight away as the kickoff went dead giving Beverley a set off six in the danger zone. The pressure finally told as forced his way over from the dummy half position for Ryan Watkin to convert and begin the fight back. It must be said that the visitors defended well as Beverley’s forwards strived manfully to go forward.

Lee Stevens, Phil Hill, Joe Wileman and Adam Norton got through a mountain of work. Half backs Ryan Watkin and Ian Lane tried to prize open the visitors’ defence and get centres Calvert and Cooper into the game but were given very little room to move in. When joining the line from full back Steve Connolly probably looked to be Beverley’s most potent attacking weapon.

Midway through the half the hosts pulled back more points. Gavin Proctor’s intelligent chip ahead was gathered by Connolly, who returned the ball to Proctor to send him under the posts for another converted try.

There were numerous stoppages in the second half, and it was frustrating for the home side who could never really build up momentum. The visitors appeared very adept at slowing the game down and playing for time.

This is just the first game of a long season ahead, and the will look to put thing’s right next Saturday when ‘A’ are the visitors to the Beverley Leisure Centre for a 2pm kick off.

Final Score: 12 Three Tuns 20 | Reported By Nick Robinson
