KC’s Fibre Project is a Pioneering One Reports The Guardian

KC’s pioneering roll-out of lightning fast fibre broadband in Hull and East Yorkshire has been put in the national spotlight after being featured in national newspaper The Guardian.

The company’s multi-million pound investment in fibre optic technology was the subject of a feature by The Guardian on 26 June 2012.

The story focused on KC’s use of Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) technology to provide its Lightstream services, highlighting the advantages of FTTP over the Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) technology used by BT in most of its fibre deployments in the UK.

The technology used by KC delivers much faster speeds than are possible with FTTC because it involves installing a fibre link that directly connects a customer’s home or to equipment in the local telephone exchange.

KC demonstrated the potential of the technology earlier this month when it launched the UK’s fastest fibre broadband service, which provides download speeds of 350Mbps.

Commenting on KC’s fibre rollout, the Guardian’s broadband specialist Juliette Garside comments, “[KC’s] fibre project is a pioneering one. If it succeeds, it may boost not only the local economy but inspire a more ambitious broadband plan for the UK.”

The Guardian article also featured comments from several KC Lightstream customers about their experience of fibre broadband.

Beverley-based web developer John Polling said:

“I could cope with a slower speed but I wouldn’t want to. It’s got to the point where I wonder ‘could I actually move house?’ If I did it would have to be to a fibre house. I’m trapped in Hull, but in a good way.”

Woodmansey resident, and his wife Susan, explained that fibre arrived just in time to allow them to stay in the village as Bill works from home. They have also used their superfast upload speeds to back up all their music and family photos to Apple’s iCloud servers, a safety precaution taken after their previous collection was lost when the home computer went wrong.

With the iPlayer and 4oD serving up instant, crisp images, viewing habits have changed.

“Now we don’t tend to watch television, we just watch [online] series,” explained Susan.

Businesses too are benefiting from the faster speeds fibre delivers. Melanie Bell of Woodmansey-based auto recovery firm Bell Truck Services said:

“It is helping our business a great deal. We used to have problems when we had thunder and lightning, where it would drop the connection. Since we’ve had fibre-optic we’ve not had a problem full stop.”

, KC’s Director of Consumer Markets said:

“What we’re doing with our fibre roll-out is ambitious and special. It’s great to see this recognised by people who live and breathe technology in their day to day jobs.

“We want to give our customers the best-connected homes and businesses in the UK, which is why we’ve recently launched KC Lightstream 350 service – UK’s fastest broadband service with guaranteed download speeds of 350Mbps.”

“In doing this, we also have a chance to put our region on the map for all the right reasons, as a place where businesses can operate efficiently and families can make the most of all the web has to offer.”

In 2012 KC will make its lightning fast fibre service available to 15,000 homes and businesses in East Yorkshire. More than 2,000 customers have already switched to KC Lightstream.

in Hull is the latest area to receive the service. Customer installations started there this week.
