Longcroft Student Wins Maths Careers Article Competition

Longcroft School and Performing Arts College Year 12 student Sally Bolton is this year’s winner of The Institute of Mathematics’ Maths Careers Article Competition.

The national competition, judged by Professor Jeffrey Paris of the University of Manchester, was open to 17 to 19 year olds and involved writing an article of up to 500 words on the work of Alan Turing. 23rd June sees the 100th Anniversary of Turing’s birth and Sally’s article now features on the Maths Careers website as a tribute to his work.

Alan Turing was the founder of computer science, a mathematician, philosopher, code-breaker and visionary. In World War 2 his code-breaking skills were critical in the success of the Allied Forces. In 2009, the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown described him as “a quite brilliant mathematician… whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war”.

Sally is an exceptional student who thoroughly deserves her success. She was encouraged to enter the competition by her Maths teacher, Mrs Cook, and was presented with her prize of a £100 Amazon voucher by IMA Chairman Chris Belsom who travelled from the to meet Sally and was full of praise for her achievement.
