Beverley ARLC bowed out of the Council Cup at the first round stage last Saturday at Costello. In a familiar tale for the visitors. There was effort and enthusiasm aplenty but errors were made at vital stages.
They were certainly prepared to take the game to the home side with Lee Stevens again leading the charge and Gavin Platt and Adam Norton also catching the eye. The ball was thrown around adventurously but too often the final pass went to ground. The home side took advantage of this and some indifferent tackling to score three first half tries to lead 14-0 at the break.
The early part of the second half saw the visitors camp out in the opposing 20 metre zone going through repeat set after set but struggling to find that final defence splitting pass. Finally after 10 minutes of sustained pressure Alex Ellis forced his way over wide out for Ryan Watkin to add the touchline conversion.
It was typical of their luck so far this season that they should fumble the restart kick and allow the home side to score from the resultant set of six and immediately cancel out the score. The home side went on to score a further 10 points to ensure their passage to the next round.
Ian Lane managed a late and deserved consolation try for the visitors. Lane and Alex Ellis and Ryan Atkin were the pick of Beverley ARLC’s backs as they never gave up in this uphill struggle.
Beverley ARLC now have just 3 remaining league fixtures. This Saturday they travel to the Roy Waudby Complex to take on Cottingham Tigers after which they will then be away to GW Horners and tier 4 bound Holderness Vikings.
Attentions are now turning to the future. Head Coach Richard Shaw has recently stood down leaving assistant Adam Wallis in charge in a caretaker role. The club wishes to thank Richard for his contribution over the past 4 seasons. He has galvanised a good club spirit and atmosphere which was matched with good on the field results 2 seasons ago but an inexplicable decline and in results left him and others frustrated which left him to feel the time was right to stand aside.
The club recognises the rapid off the field progress the club has made during his tenure for which he will be sorely missed. This leaves a vacancy for head coach and at the clubs most recent monthly meeting the criteria was set. Beverley ARLC RLFC has tremendous potential.
It is situated in a centrally located at the Leisure Centre in an area were massive iconic retail and residential regeneration is currently taking place. The club is underpinned by a junior section featuring six teams plus a cubs section totalling 130 registered players.
A new and suitably qualified head coach needs to able attract back all of those players that have passed through the clubs youth system but have drifted away to clubs in Hull. In short the best players that live in Beverley ARLC need to play for Beverley ARLC!
If you feel you need the above criteria please contact Chairman Graham Ostler on 07761266744 or PRO Nick Robinson on 07900158445.
