Smith Scores Four As United March On

Four goals from prolific goal scorer Emma Smith were the highlights of this performance from Mill Lane giving the Beverley side their eleventh straight league victory to maintain their 100 % record in the East Riding Girls League.

After the heroics of last weeks top of the table clash it was important that did not take their opposition lightly.The game started with both sides trying to get the territorial advantage and a well organised enthusiastic Westella side were determined to make life difficult for their high flying opponents.

United were struggling to create chances with Westella competing for every ball and any half chances were well dealt with by the Westells defence and good goalkeeping kept the scores level for the first 15 minutes.

Finally Mill Lane let the pressure tell and good interplay by Emma Smith and Emma Johnson released midfielder Millie O’Neill 30yards out ,quickly getting the ball under control and racing into the area before beating the goal keeper with a great right foot shot from 10 yards to give Mill Lane a 1 0 lead.

Mill Lane were struggling to get any rhythm into their play and the normal passing football from the midfield was missing as the game became a scrappy affair as both teams tried to take control.

Mid way through the half Mill Lane started to take control and numerous chances went begging with a combination off poor finishing and exellant goal keeping from the Westella shot stopper.Finally the pressure told and after hand ball was given in the Westella penalty area the spot kick was converted by Emma Smith making the score 2 0.

Mill Lane United were a little off colour up front the defence was outstanding well led by Chloe Johnson and captain Emily Holliday ably assisted by Amy Radford and Charlotte Holliday who absorbed anything the Westells attack had to offer.

The beverley sides midfied now started to assert with midfielder carrying on her recent good form and it was Storr who increased the lead just before half time. After a good ball out of defence by Chloe Johnstone found Storr racing 40yards to convert and make it 3 0 at half time to Mill Lane.

If Mill Lane United were slow to get going in the first half they were fast out of the blocks in the second half and soon put the game out of Westella reach with 3 quick fire goals from midfielder Emma Smith the first after good battling by Tonya Storr released hard working striker who inturn found Smith free 10yards out to finish with ease and goals 5 and 6 were converted by Smith after two exellant finishes after great individual runs from midfield.

With the game now safe Mill Lane made changes as substitutes Sarah Bromwich,Courtney Fee ,Lucy Crockett and Hannah Smith were introduced , but still the goals continued as Mill Lane created more chances the seventh goal and second of the match for Tonya Storr came after a fine pass out of defence from Charlotte Holliday got Storr into space before converting in style and the last goal came from substitute Courtney Fee after good work from Keely Forward in the Mill Lane attack.

Credit to Westells who can take plenty out of the game for a battling performance which will stand them in good stead for the remainder of the season and their efforts were rewarded with a consolation goal as the game finished with an 8 1 victory to Mill Lane.

So for Mill Lane another 3 points and the knowledge that victory next week will take them back to the top of the table as they play one of their games in hand .Performance wise for Mill Lane this week was little down on last week with the highlights been man of the match performances from Tonya Storr and Millie O’Neill .
