United Make It Eight Wins In Eight

Mill Lane United travelled to Selby to play one of their closest rivals at the top of the table knowing a victory would seriously dent Brayton Belles title credentials.

The game started with Brayton quickly on the attack as Mill Lane United struggled to play their usual passing football on a mud bath of a pitch.

Brayton knew a win was essential to keep them chasing the leaders at the top of the table and this showed in their desire to be first to every ball as they totally dominated possesion giving them a massive terittorial advantage as Mill Lane United struggled to get out of their own half.

It was only heroic defence from Chloe Bell,Emily Holliday and in particular and Amy Radford who made several last ditch tackles to keep a rampant Belles attack out,and on the occassions they broke through the last man in defence, Emily Hood in the Mill Lane United travelled to Selby to play one of their closest rivals at the top of the table knowing a victory would seriously dent Brayton Belles title credentials.

The Beverley side absorbed the pressure and took the lead when a sweeping move found hard working striker in the Brayton penalty area ,Forward rode a strong defensive challenge before getting a pass away to Tonya Storr who hit a neat right foot shot over the keepers head to give Mill Lane United a 1 0 lead against the run of play.

This seemed to wake up the Beverley side and with Tonya Storr leading by example midfield challenges were now been won and a second goal soon followed,Forward received the ball in the penalty area ,quickly getting the ball under control after a strong challenge with a Brayton defender before finishing with a strong right foot shot.

Mill Lane United continued to enjoy a more even share of possession as the half drew to a close but no more goals materialised and the half time score finished 2 0 to Mill Lane United.

The second half started much the same as the first with Brayton Belles charging forward trying to get back into the game only to be repelled by the Mill Lane Uniteds defence with Chloe Johnstone outstanding with some excellant defensive challenges and some intelligent ball distribution and excellant goal keeping from Emily Hood who made several important saves.

Still trying to play football on a very difficult pitch Mill Lane Uniteds patience was rewarded when a good ball out of defence by Emily Holliday found in space a quick interchange with fellow midfielder Emma Johnson got Mill Lane United over half way before a superb through ball by Johnson found Forward racing down the left wing ,quickly cutting into the penaly area before an unselfish square ball found hard working strike partner Jodie Brown unmarked 8 yards out to convert for 3 0 to the Beverley side.

Credit to Brayton who at this point could have given the game up for dead, but their hard work was rewarded with 2 quick fire goals to make the score 3 2 and set up a tense last 15 minutes for Mill Lane United.Visibly shaken and playing underpar against a rampant Brayton side Mill Lane United spent the last 15 minutes in their own half defending attack after attack.Struggling to get the ball out of their own half the Beverley side were reliant on some last gasp defence with Emily Holliday and Emma Smith leading by example ably assisted by midfielders Tonya Storr and Charlotte Holliday who chased and harried themselves to a standstill.

The final whistle went and Mill Lane United knew they had not played to their full potential ,but they still came away with 3 points against a physical and totally commited side who can take great credit for pushing their opponents all the way. For Mill Lane United man of the match went to defender Chloe Johnstone for a superb defensive performance and coaches choice went to Tonya Storr who covered every blade of grass in a totally commited 70 minute performance.

Mill Lane United can now look back on their start to the season with pride 8 league games played 8 victories recorded giving them 2nd place in the league to date with 4 games in hand on league leaders Malet Lambert and the destiny of the League Title totally in their own hands and also a Tesco Cup final against Hessle to look forward to.
