Yorkshire Day ‘Battle of the Ridings’

There’s an old Yorkshire saying:  “You can beat an Egg, You can beat a Drum, But you can’t beat a good Chef!”

Multi-talented Chef, star of Channel 4 TV’s ‘Lakes on a Plate,’  Author and Beverley College graduate , was at the , Normandy Barracks  on ‘Yorkshire Day’ Monday 1st of AUGUST 2011 to judge a Yorkshire Day Cookery Competition between:

Warrant Officer Class 1 John Ford RLC (Regimental Sergeant Major – DST, West Yorkshire) and Linsey Taylor  (Military Guard Service DST, East Yorkshire)

Competitors slaved (in the sweltering heat) over hot stoves in an attempt to outdo each other with their culinary expertise using locally sourced produce.  A true – ’Battle of the Yorkshire Ridings.’  Despite his lumpy potatoes and his original (yet unsavoury) gravy recipe, RSM Ford swung it with his tasty sausages.  John and Linsey’s culinary efforts were judged by DST Commandant, Colonel Paul Ash.

In addition to demonstrating how to spice up the contents of a basic military ration pack, Peter Sidwell also made ‘quick bread’ with the help of some of the local children.
