Course: Researching Your Family History

A course on researching family being held at the Treasure House in Beverley will help people to find out who they are and where they come from.

Thousands of people find tracing their family history such a fascinating and rewarding hobby.

Recent television programmes such as the ’s ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ show effortlessly tracking down their ancestor’s footsteps whilst the experts do the hard work for them.

In reality however, most people find it difficult to know where to start and, unlike the television programmes, those taking on this hobby need to be prepared to do some research if they want to learn about their ancestors.

Elizabeth Baker, public services officer for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:  “The course is ideal for complete beginners or those who are looking to develop their genealogy skills.

“It will cover the basic building blocks for any family history research – census records, civil registration and parish records, as well as resources for further investigating the lives of our ancestors such as records of crime, work and schools. Participants will also learn the best ways of recording their information and preserving their own documents.”

The six month course will start on Thursday, October 14, at the , in Champney Road, . It will be held on the second Thursday of each month until December and the third Thursday of each month from January. Places are limited and booking is essential.
