East Yorkshire Cross Country League Race

Beverley Athletic Club hosted the second race in this season’s East Yorkshire Cross Country League at Drewton Woods near South Cave last Sunday.  Conditions were perfect – mild with sunshine and a reasonable amount of mud.

Fresh from the English National Cross Country Relay Championships the previous weekend, was Beverley’s fastest man, finishing in fifth position in 39.31.  James is having an excellent first season with Beverley and is proving to be a very consistent runner.

The times of the first six men to finish for each club count towards the team competition.  After two races the Beverley men lie in fourth position.  City of Hull and Scarborough are fielding very strong teams this year but with another 4 races to complete the Beverley men will be mounting a fierce challenge.

Carrie Smith, née Millson, competing in her first race since getting married at the end of October, led the Beverley ladies home.  She finished in eighth position in a time of 49.53 and boosted the team performance.  The times of the first three ladies count towards the team competition and Beverley is currently in fifth position.   Helen Storr, Sam Allen and have worked hard to keep up with the leaders and if Carrie continues to compete Beverley ladies will have a good chance of moving up the league table.

Out of the limelight and at the back of the field, Beverley was represented by a group of dedicated and determined slower runners both male and female.  They all enjoy cross country running and the opportunity to represent their club.  Their achievements over the six mile course at South Cave, up and down some very steep hills, through woods and mud also deserve recognition.

First man to finish was City of Hull’s Stuart Carmichael in 37.51 and the first lady was Katy Rawnsley of Scarborough in 43.08.
