Following the successful ‘Lockdown Edition’ of its workshops for music-makers and composers from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, Opera North is seeking applications for next spring’s Resonance programme, and planning for a return to collaborations in person, with live scratch performances in front of audiences.
An Opera North mainstage favourite as a baritone, Gavan Ring returns to the company as a tenor for the Viennese Whirl New Year concert at Hull City Hall on 31 December.
“This year has been a rollercoaster!” laughs the singer, who was born and raised in County Kerry, southwest Ireland. “I literally finished up being a baritone in May, then my first ever concert as a tenor – at the National Concert Hall Dublin – was broadcast by RTÉ in Ireland!”
Acclaimed composer Gavin Bryars and his Ensemble will be joined by singer and songwriter Gavin Friday for a performance of Nothing Like the Sun, Bryars’ commission for Opera North and the Royal Shakespeare Company, at the University of Hull’s Middleton Hall on 4 April.
The haunting, dramatic piece for chamber group and voices weaves Bryars’ music through eight of Shakespeare’s sonnets. The performers include Bryars himself on double bass, tenor John Potter, and American soprano Claron McFadden.
Sam Dunkley, a professional conductor, is bringing his company, Performing Arts etc, to Beverley and Hull this summer giving young people aged 8 – 16 the chance to perform in two well-known musicals.
In partnership with East Riding Schools Music Service and Hull Music Hub, the music, theatre and dance company will be bringing professionals from stage and screen to the Hexagon Centre, Beverley and Albermarle Music Centre, Hull during the school holidays.
During 2017 – 19, former Opera North cellist Miriam Roycroft, and Lance Coburn, are performing the entire repertoire for cello and piano by Bohuslav Martinů at selected venues throughout Ireland.
They are delighted to present some of these enticing and rarely-heard compositions in Beverley on Thursday, 15 February at 7.30pm at Toll Gavel United Church.

A new activity based group for pre-schoolers is coming to Beverley as Opera North launches its popular Little Singers next week at the East Riding Theatre.
Opera North say they aim to get those tiny toes tapping at their workshops which encourage youngsters to enjoy music in relaxed environment.
