East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s grounds maintenance team has won a national award for the Best Parks and Greenspace Innovation.

ERYC bosses say they are thrilled for their grounds maintenance team who have through hard work helped improve the service.

Paul Tripp, head of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“I’m thrilled that the grounds maintenance team has won this award. They should be very proud of what they have achieved.”

“They have taken on board a lot of changes in the past couple of years, but their efforts have really helped to improve the service.”

Efforts of the council were acknowledged at the APSE Environmental Services Innovation Awards 2018 that were held in Nottingham.

Staff who make up the grounds maintenance team are responsible for a staggering 1,400 hectares of grass. This equates to an area that is the same size as the North York Moors.

Also, the team is responsible for maintaining 22 hectares of shrub beds and two acres of flower beds.

In an attempt to reduce costs and improve efficiency by the council, the team has had to endure changes to how they work. But these changes are leading to better results for them and the public.

A new tracking system installed on machinery allows the team to plan more efficient schedules. By tracking areas that have been cut this is making improving the service.

As a result of the changes made, there has been a 25pc in the productivity. Also due to the changes, there has been a reduction in complaints received from residents.

Grounds Maintenance Team praised by APSE CEO

APSE chief executive Paul O’Brien praised the winners, he said;

“The winners of these awards are amongst the best at delivering outstanding local government environmental services.”

“APSE works continually to encourage public service excellence and we are delighted that all our finalists and winning councils are so highly committed to delivering the best possible services for the benefit of their communities.”
