East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve a ninth year of free Christmas parking for the four weekends in the run up to Christmas and to also suspend parking charges for Armistice Day on Sunday, 11 November.
Events will be taking place at cenotaphs and memorials across the country, including those in the East Riding, and will focus on the centenary of the end of the First World War – a conflict that claimed the lives of more than 700,000 British service personnel.
To help those commemorating the occasion, the council’s cabinet will be asked to support the suspension of parking charges at its on-street and off-street pay and display locations.
Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“With 2018 marking 100 years since the end of the First World War, it is more important than ever that we reflect on the bravery, dedication to duty and sacrifice of our armed forces – past and present – on Remembrance Sunday.”
Plans are also being put to cabinet to approve the popular free Christmas parking initiative for a ninth year.
Subject to cabinet approval, pay and display machines in the council’s on-street and off-street parking locations will be clearly marked to let shoppers know there is no charge for the weekends of 1-2, 8-9, 15-16 and 22-23 December, from 8am on Saturday until 8am on Monday.
Councillor Parnaby said: “The Christmas period is a key trading time for our local high streets. During the current period of economic uncertainty, it is vitally important that the council does all it can to support local businesses and encourage residents and visitors to shop in the East Riding.
“If approved, free Christmas parking would be in place for Small Business Saturday on 1 December.
“Now in its sixth year, Small Business Saturday is a campaign that this council whole-heartedly supports. Small and medium sized enterprises are the lifeblood of the East Riding economy and this campaign helps focus on the great work they do and to encourage people to shop locally.”
The free parking initiatives for Remembrance Sunday and for Christmas will be presented to cabinet for approval on Tuesday, 17 July at 10.30am.
