One of Britain’s greatest Olympians has told students at an East Yorkshire college to grasp the opportunities ahead of them and fulfill their potential.

Former rower Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, who won gold medals at five consecutive , said students at have been given the perfect platform to pursue their dreams.

Bishop Burton, which was this week named ‘Outstanding BTEC College of the Year’ at a prestigious national awards ceremony, held its annual end of year Presentation Day on Friday for students at its campus near Beverley.

More than 2,000 students received certificates after successfully completing their further education courses. Prize-winning students who excelled in their studies also received trophies and plaques.

Special guest Sir Steve, who triumphed at the Olympics from 1984 to 2000 to cement his place in history as one of the country’s greatest every athletes, told them they were at the beginning of an exciting journey.

He said: “It is about hard work you put in and that drive. It is about passion and desire. The more you put in, the more you get out.

“To all of the successful students here today – some of you are still continuing with your studies, whilst some of you are going out into what some people call the big, bad world.

“What I would say to you is this – dig deep and focus on what you want to do. Make sure you achieve what you want to achieve.”

Delivering her annual report, OBE, Chief Executive and Principal of Bishop Burton College, said: “What a hard working group of students we have before us.

“The staff are also to be congratulated on their hard work and commitment to the support of students and the success of Bishop Burton College. There is no clearer evidence of that than the celebration of success that we have today.

“To Bishop Burton College students – I wish you well for your further studies or your future careers and will be thinking of you in your future journeys in life.”

Bishop Burton, which specialises in agriculture, equine, animal management and sport courses, was named ‘Outstanding College of the Year’ at the BTEC Awards 2017 on Thursday.

The awards, held by accrediting body Pearson, celebrate the finest educational institutions and students in the country and this year received almost 1,000 applications.

Bishop Burton, a two-time winner of the highly sought after British Quality Foundation (BQF) UK Excellence Award, was praised for the outstanding delivery of a wide range of BTEC courses and strong links with employers, which help students find work at the end of their studies.

Judges were impressed by the commitment of all staff to ensuring students achieve, with 97% going on to secure employment or a higher level of study within six months of completing their course.

Along with the College scooping the overall award, student Katrina Turnbull, 18, was also named individual ‘Outstanding BTEC Public Services Student of the Year’.

The College, which includes Riseholme College in Lincolnshire and is a Centre of Vocational Excellence for both agriculture and equine, was also recently confirmed as the host venue for the 2018 FEI Pony European Championships.

Along with the further education ceremony at the College on Friday, hundreds of degree students also graduated at a similar event on Thursday.

Student Association President Tyler Price, 22, delivered a vote of thanks at both occasions.

He said: “I speak for all my fellow students when I thank the Principal and her staff, our friends and loved ones for their encouragement over our time here at the College – we couldn’t be here without you.

“We have been well prepared to tackle what is in front of us and today is testament to what is possible when we put our minds to it.

“Please stay in touch and I wish you all the very best for the future.”
