O'Connell Spot Kick Sends Town To Northern Counties Senior Cup Final

Beverley Town booked their place in the Northern Counties Senior Cup final thanks a to a second half penalty from skipper Michael O’Connell.

Humber Premier League Champions Beverley Town travelled to the West Riding to take Rimington FC a side with a history full of championships and cup wins.

Town started the game the stronger creating a number of chances in the first half, but despite breaching through the Rimington FC defence only to find an inform Graham Kershaw who dealt with everything Beverley through at him.

Match referee David McNamara kept control of the game with Pierluigi Collina style performance, getting all the decisions right including the penalty that proved decisive.

Beverley Town manager Dave Ricardo said;

“This was a good win against a workman like side, our entire defence was superb throughout the game.”

With Adam Nicholson unavailable for the game Billy Iggleden was called upon from the reserves to keep goal for Town.

Ricardo added;

“Iggleden was class today, he did not have too much to do but when he was called upon he dealt with it.”

When asked about the penalty incident that led to the goal Ricardo said;

“I think it was a foul but I would have felt quite hard done by had it been awarded by us. The referee had a very good game.”

Chelsea Fox who travelled to support Beverley Town felt the best side one, she said;

“Beverley had the most chances, they could have scored more goals and probably deserved more too.”

After the match the West Riding treated the players and supporters from both sides with a hot meal, Ricardo something that was not wasted on Town’s boss, he said;

“I would like to thank the West Riding for their hospitality and also thank all the supporters who made the trip to Rothwell to see the game.”

Beverley will now have to wait see who they will face in the final which will be played in either Cheshire or Lancashire later in the season.
