Protesters were again on the streets outside County Hall in Beverley as they continued to let East Riding of Yorkshire Council know their feelings about improvements proposed for Saturday Market.
A number of placards were carried with slogans one accusing the council of being out of touch. This is the second protest in just four days, on Sunday hundreds of people took to the streets in an attempt to protect to the towns cobbled roads.
The Conservative-run authority intends to replace the market surface with block paving and renew adjoining York stone pavements saying it will make the area more pedestrian-friendly.

In my opinion, the ERYC should hang their heads in shame for even contemplating this sacrilege against the history and character of Beverley’s market place. Once these setts are removed they will be lost forever. I cannot see any justifiable reason for removing them, let alone spending an unbelievable £2.5 million to do so. If there is any true democracy, the council will listen to the people of Beverley and beyond. I would love to know the ratio of public support for this plan, compared to public opposition.
After reading ERYC description of ‘ a conservation area ‘ on their very own website I am a little unsure as to why ‘ the rules ‘ don’t apply to them??
I am all for investment in our local area….why not make the cobbles an integral part of the alterations to saturday market? English Heritage seem to be able to protect lamposts and pillar boxes in Beverley…….why not the cobbles??
I wonder if York would have the same appeal to tourists down ‘ The Shambles ‘ if it was block paved??? I have signed the online petition @ sos save our setts if you are reading this please go there and sign too lets not let local authority ride rough shod over the conservation rules they themselves put in place for everyone else.
Once again the Councillors are destroying Beverley as a historical market town. It seems that the only thing they have in mind is the destruction of our town. They should hang their heads in shame and the Councillors who decide to vote for this destruction should be voted out by the people of Beverley. Maybe the Leader of the Council should listen to what the people want instead of spending all his time going from photo shoot to photo shoot!

Six years on, I just want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who helped save these cobbles. Beverley still looks AMAZING thanks to you. I live in York and York Council did not listen to the people or English Heritage and replaced cobbles on King’s Square with £500,000 of bland blocks, which could belong anywhere … anywhere that is apart from in a historic city. Strange how councils in every other European country manage to preserve their cobbles – even in the very centre of Paris. What leaders we unfortunately have.
