11th Great Year of The English Philharmonic Orchestra’s popular and hugely successful Candlelit Christmas Concert Tour with its seasonal warmth and special intimate and friendly atmosphere.
The Philharmonic Ensemble, conducted by David Haslam plays a variety of orchestral music with a Christmas flavour and this year features soloists Tristan Guerney, Suzanne Manuel, Philip Cull, Anthony Thompson and a surprise guest soloist. It is joined by The Singers (director Donald Halliday) for the concerts in Carlisle, Hexham, and Newcastle and by The Beverley Singers (director Alan Spedding) for the final concert in Beverley Minster.
Our programme for this year begins with Torelli’s lovely “Christmas Concerto” followed by the celebratory sound of the trumpet in Jeramiah Clarke’s “Trumpet Suite” with soloist Anthony Thompson. Two special Christmas pieces for unaccompanied choir are followed by Tavener’s famous piece ‘The Lamb’ and the first half concludes with a performance of ‘Winter’ from Vivaldi’s “The Seasons” played by Tristan Guerney, (Leader of The Edinburgh String Quartet.)
The second half opens with a new arrangement of a work by David Haslam, ‘Kyrie’, for orchestra, choir & soprano solo, sung by Suzanne Manuel followed by Vivaldi’s Concerto in A Minor with soloists Philip Cull (oboe) and David Haslam (flute). Three pieces for unaccompanied choir and two carols for audience and orchestra, precede Adam’s famous ‘O Holy Night’ sung by Suzanne Manuel. Our Christmas selection of favourite music from Handel’s “Messiah’’ concludes this Candlelit Christmas Concert.
