Beverley Town took another giant step towards retaining their Humber Premier League title with a 3 -2 win over Westella & Willerby.

A brace from Matty Start and a goal from Dane Mortimer helped a out of sorts Beverley side come from behind to win the game.

After going behind to a penalty mid-way through the first-half Town battled their way back into the match to go 3 – 1 ahead with Westella pulling a goal back in last minute of the game.

Beverley Town manager Dave Ricardo was ‘not impressed’ with the team’s performance he said;

“This was the worst performance the team has put in my time at the club. It was truly shocking.”

“Our attitude and work rate was terrible, and we were not putting any pressure on the ball, which allowed Westella to play.”

When asked why his team looked a shadow of the Beverley Town people have become used to seeing, he said;

“I think it is partly down to it being a night game. I have never been keen on them as we do not get enough time before the game to prepare the players.”

“When you play in Humber Premier League you need to prepare. You can’t just pull on your boots and play, that was clearly the case in this match.”

Club captain Michael O’Connell although happy with the victory felt the performance was not up to scratch, speaking after the game he said;

“We were not good enough tonight. A win is a win, but we need to play better than this if we are to win the games we need to clinch to the championship.”

Despite playing badly things worked out well for Town, current leaders Reckitts AFC slumped to their second defeat in three days as they were smashed by fourth placed Sculcoates Amateurs 2 – 0.

Commenting on Reckitts game, Ricardo said;

“I think our win over Reckitts on Saturday influenced their result on Tuesday a little. What you are witnessing is a power shift in the Humber Premier League from Hull to Beverley and that’s something everyone connected with the town should be shouting about.”

“We have picked up maximum points in our last couple of games. We have not won anything yet, but if we carry on the way we are going, we could win the tile by an 11 point margin.”

“Sometimes you just have to grind out results. I would rather play badly and win then play well and lose, that is what we done tonight.”

“After the game we sat down and went through everything and discussed things as a team. No tea cups were chucked about it was all very calm and I got a good response from the players.”

Beverley Town return to action this Saturday at the Norwood Recreation Ground as they take on Hedon Rangers.
