In 1968, the St Romanus trawler was one of three ships that sank in January and February. Incredibly, only one trawlerman survived.

This led to improved safety standards in the fishing industry thanks to the Headscarf Revolutionaries.

In an area where fishing is a popular past-time, an annual ceremony marks the 1968 sinking.

One captivating famous memorial, The Last Trawlermen, is set to reappear at Hull’s waterfront.

The Lost Trawlermen Memorial

This stunning memorial sculpture was created by Peter Naylor. In 2017, Dr John Sentamu, who was the Archbishop of York at the time, conducted a ceremony when it was first unveiled close to the Sailmaker Arms. This is a public house and restaurant, which is on St Andrew’s Quay.

Two years later, in 2019, Naylor’s sculpture was placed into storage whilst construction work started on the new flood defences around the Quay. Before this, Lost Trawlerman’s Day, the annual commemoration service for the lost trawlermen, always took place at the memorial site.

It was STAND fishing heritage group that had chosen the location. They’re keen to see the memorial return to its original home now that the flood defences have been built.

It looks like there will also be a landscaped garden area around The Lost Trawlermen Memorial. Original proposals had it divided into three themes – home, dock and sea – to reflect the history of the fishing industry and docks in the area.

Getting Ready to Fish

Fishing is a popular past-time in the area and has been for centuries. There are some short fishing breaks that diehard fishing fans can go on, for instance, that are organised by holiday parks. With loads of local fisheries, such as the Nidd, Leven Park Lake and Swale, to name just a few, it’s not hard to see why fishing is part of the community.

As any person used to fishing knows, you can have the right equipment, perfect weather, and be in the right place, but it can take hours to catch a fish if you’re lucky to catch one at all. This is why it’s always good to take some snacks, a drink, and a few items to protect you from different elements.

A lot of us have smartphones, which are great to use to stream stuff to watch, whether it’s films or movies, or used to play in an online casino. There are games with a range of themes, such as Scarab Fortunes Win or Spin, which is set against an Ancient Egypt backdrop.

There are fishing-themed games, including Fishin Frenzy slot, and sports themes, like football in Spinions Game Day. When it comes to themes and games, all you need is a good internet connection wherever you’re sitting to fish, and you’re all set.

With The Lost Trawlermen Memorial finally coming home, the fishing industry in Hull and surrounding areas will have cause to remember how the fishing industry changed for the better, thanks to the women who were the Headscarf Revolutionaries, and teach others about the history of fishing in their area.
