St Mary’s ward councillor Linda Johnson was, this evening, elected as the 418th Mayor of Beverley, and only the 13th woman to hold the office in its 448-year history, dating back to Tudor times.

Cllr Johnson was elected at the Town Council’s annual Mayor Making ceremony, which took place virtually on Zoom for the second year running due to the Covid restrictions. Linda takes over the chains of office from Cllr Tom Astell, who last year became the youngest mayor in the history of the office.

Cllr Denis Healy said;

“It is a privilege to work alongside Linda as my fellow East Riding ward councillor for Beverley St Mary’s ward, and I know that she will be an absolutely brilliant Mayor.”

“Her passion for Beverley, her faith, and her desire to make life better for the people she comes into contact with are truly inspiring.”

“I know this honour means the world to her, and with her husband, Graham, by her side as her consort, I know she will put every ounce of her incredible energy into the role.”

“I also want to pay tribute to the outgoing mayor, Tom Astell.”

“Tom’s Mayoral year wasn’t what he thought it was going to be due to Covid. Opportunities for him to perform civic and town functions, and host memorable events have been few, but he has been visible in other ways.”

“Tom will go down in history as the first mayor to have spent a whole year chairing meetings on Zoom.”

“He has used social media very effectively to communicate with people, and he’s the first mayor to have hosted a Facebook cabaret to raise money for his charities. His enthusiasm and professionalism have inspired all of us, and I want to thank him for his huge contribution to public life in this town.”

Newly appointed mayor Cllr Johnson said;

“I have lived in this area for 32 years, and becoming Beverley’s first citizen is a dream come true.”

“I want to make a difference by building on the community spirit that the response to Covid 19 has engendered.”

has changed its logo to ‘working as a community,’ because that’s what Beverley has become. So many have put themselves out for others in so many different ways; volunteering, donating, caring – and the Town Council has been able to support some of the community responses with practical and financial donations.”

“I want the Council to continue that support and keep building that community spirit by becoming partners with some of these community groups, and I will be announcing more details of the Council’s new community partnership scheme in the coming weeks.”

“It’s a scheme that will provide financial and practical support for the groups, organisations and clubs which make the town special, and all of them will have an opportunity to participate.”

Cllr Johnson concluded by saying;

“To enjoy Beverley at the moment, we all need to be safe. So let’s keep following the rules until they ease, as we know they will.”

“And when it’s safe and we have coronavirus under control, we will celebrate, but we will also commemorate those we have lost and we will recognise those who have worked as a community to help those in need.”

“Meanwhile, may God bless us all.”
