The community and economic effects of Covid-19 will come under the spotlight at a top-level online conference to be held by a business which works internationally to drive positive social impact through transformational change.

A prominent businesswoman and campaigner Gina Miller will deliver the keynote speech at “Time for Something Better: Beyond Covid”, which will be hosted by Agencia on Thursday 26 November.

Clive Conway, Chairman of the Tutu Foundation, will also join the line-up of speakers for the event, which is free of charge and will be delivered by Zoom. The host for the event will be Pumela Salela, who focuses on economic development and attracting foreign direct investment in her role as UK Head for Brand South Africa.

The conference was inspired by Agencia’s own work tackling issues around justice and health in more than 20 countries worldwide. Its own experts will speak about the way in which the pressures of lockdown have fuelled a rise in opioid use in the UK and how Covid-19 has been seized upon internationally as an opportunity for people involved in serious and organised crime.

Gina Miller, a high-profile campaigner against growing inequality and social fragmentation, will speak on the theme “2020s – Towards a Decade of Less Talk and More Action”.

She will examine the view of the post-Covid world as a double-edged sword, presenting an opportunity to accelerate change but in a debt-ridden society, were near-term survival is the only item on the agenda and the vulnerable are more likely to suffer.

She will also promote the concept that everyone has the capacity to be a change-maker, shifting the priorities from short-term impact to long term value and investing in social capital, using our humanity to promote cooperation and solutions to the hardest problems facing us.

Other speakers will focus on finding solutions to tackle youth crime and mental health, how the lessons from Black Lives Matter can help to build peaceful communities and creative responses to the challenge of employability in a Covid economic climate. The speeches will be followed by a panel discussion.

Helen Gibson, Managing Director of Agencia, said: “The event is aimed at funders, commissioners, policymakers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and will highlight the reality of the need for change, with particular references to learning and change triggered by Covid.

“It is one of the most ambitious events we have organised with a guest list of influential figures from government, national and regional agencies, business and charities but at times like this it’s important to step up with fresh ideas to seek new solutions and that is what we are doing.

“We are offering a great opportunity to listen to speakers who are experts in their field and to engage with them directly in a panel discussion.”

The online summit “Time for Something Better: Beyond Covid – a new approach to some of the most complex issues of our time” will take place on Thursday 26 November from 15:45 until 17:30.
