Macmillan Announce £1m Investment To Support Local People Affected By Cancer

Every year in this area, 2274 people hear the devastating news they have cancer and the number of people living with cancer in this area is set to almost double by 2030. This is why Macmillan Cancer Support are investing £1million into vital cancer services in this area.

An event was held at Castle Hill Hospital where volunteers, fundraisers and committee members were joined by Lady Halifax, the President of Macmillan to hear from Fundraising Managers Becky Read and Clara White, Macmillan Nurse Sarah Guest, and Macmillan Partnership Manager Lorraine McDonald about the exciting investment that is happening right here on our doorsteps.

This investment will fund more essential cancer services such as: additional Macmillan Palliative Nurse Specialists so the team are able to run a 7 day a week service, a Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse to ensure patients receive care that meets their needs and a Macmillan Colorectal Cancer Nurse Specialist to provide extra resource to support bowel cancer patients in the local area along with a number of other roles and services.

As you can imagine, funding these new posts will make a significant difference to the lives of patients and their families during one of the most challenging times of their lives.

Fundraising Manager for East Yorkshire, Becky Read said;

“We are currently running a campaign to raise the funds for these new investments, and any money raised would be restricted to this area, it’s brilliant news for Hull and East Riding and we are really keen to engage local companies and individuals. Cancer sadly affects 1 in 2 people and we want to make sure everyone in East Yorkshire gets the support they need and deserve.”

Tim Haley who attended the event and is involved in the organisation of Macmillan’s annual Carol Concert in said;

“My Daughter, Vicki, passed away from cancer in 2013 when she was only 41. We are so grateful that we had the support of Macmillan right from her initial diagnosis. The Macmillan team gave Vicki and our family, their time, energy, support and advice so we didn’t have to go through it on our own. I am so pleased that Macmillan are wanting to invest so heavily in new local cancer services, especially at Castle Hill where Vicki received so much of her care. I know first-hand how hard cancer can be and to have to go through all of that without Macmillan would be unimaginable”
