Funding has once again been awarded to the Holderness Coast Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, to continue its valuable work assisting the East Riding’s coastal communities and local fishing industry.

There is funding available for the fishing industry, fishing communities and groups and organisations involved in the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the Holderness coast from the FLAG initiative.

The FLAG, which is a private/public sector partnership, aims to assist the East Riding’s coastal communities and the local fishing industry to improve the economic prosperity and quality of life in the area. Funding of £800,000 has been secured to enable a programme of activity to be developed and delivered in the FLAG area.

The new programme, which will run from February 2017 until March 2020, aims to increase the contribution that the fishing industry can make to the sustainable social and economic regeneration of the East Riding’s fishing communities.

The FLAG has developed a strategy based on the coastal area’s needs and aims of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) programme. Funding will be available for the following priorities:

• Strengthening the fishery to become more sustainable. This priority will focus on strengthening the existing fishery, removing barriers to growth and facilitating a more sustainable industry
• Facilitating growth and diversification. This priority will focus on growing the industry through innovation and diversification
• Encouraging growth in supporting sectors. This priority will focus on growing those sectors which could benefit the fishing industry or which have synergy with it
• Improving marine and coastal environments. This priority will focus on making sustainable improvements to the marine and coastal environments of the FLAG area.

Councillor , portfolio holder for economic investment and at , said: “We are delighted to once again be able to help new businesses and projects get off the ground and contribute to the offering of fantastic freshly-sourced seafood in the area.

“The FLAG has been very keen to assist the establishment of new companies which can use local seafood product and bring it to a wider regional audience.

“The quality of locally-caught crab and lobster is second to none and these developments will help to raise awareness of it and bring extra employment to the local area.”

Mike Cohen, CEO of the Holderness Fishing Industry Group, said: “The previous FLAG programme achieved a lot for the fishing industry and communities in the Holderness area.

“I’m delighted to be able to congratulate the FLAG team on winning this important funding for our region for a second time.

“The hard work of pulling projects together starts here, but I have no doubt that many people will rise to the challenge again and make good use of this opportunity.”
