Kings Head Beverley Crowned Best in the East Riding

A Beverley bar has been crowned the best in the East Riding at a ceremony to celebrate the best licensed premises in the county.

The King’s Head in Saturday Market was named the overall winner in the fourth East Riding Best Bar None awards, which were held at Beverley Racecourse on Wednesday, 23 November.

And there was more success for Beverley premises as The Queen’s Head, Cross Keys and East Riding Theatre also walked off with awards.

The Best Bar None scheme is a national scheme and was introduced with the aim of establishing a standard of excellence within pubs, clubs and bars and is implemented by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s licensing team.

The scheme focuses on safety, public health initiatives and customer care, as well as helping to raise standards in the licensed trade to ensure responsible management of the premises.

This year, 32 premises were successful in gaining accreditation in the Best Bar None Scheme, which consists of a plaque and certificate for public display.

The winners in each of the individual categories were:

• Best Pub – Cross Keys, Beverley
• Best Bar – King’s Head, Beverley
• Best Community Premises – Wrygarth Inn, Great Hatfield
• Best Food Led- Benjamin Fawcett, Driffield
• Best Entertainment Venue- East Riding Theatre, Beverley
• Best New Entrant- East Riding Theatre, Beverley
• Best Independent Pub- Queen’s Head, Beverley

Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“I was delighted to see the response of the local licences to the Best Bar None Awards scheme and congratulate those worthy winners.

“This scheme encourages licensees to act responsibly and take pride in their premises and surroundings and, in doing so, put something back into their local community.

“The effort of all of the participants is highly commendable bringing lots of rewards for licensees including, the prestige of being part of the awards scheme, increased business in the area and lower insurance premiums resulting from the fact that they are running safer establishments.

“However, the main winners of the awards scheme are the local community and visitors, who benefit from a more welcoming, attractive, lively and above all safer place to visit.”
